Treating
900 gallons of sewage a day is no easy task at
any given time. Here at Driftwood Park Retreat, because of its fragile
location, and having access to a natural field of cattails, we opted
for a different approach to our sewage system. A conventional system
would have required thousands of cubic yards of aggregate, an electrical
pump, and holding tanks.
A
terrain and water technologist designed a wetland sewage treatment
system for our chalets. It is the first system of its kind in Nova
Scotia and it is operated by gravity with the help of a myriad of
aquatic plants. From the septic tanks to the finishing ponds, nature
is at work. Goldfish were placed in the pond as babies and have
since given birth and seem to be flourishing in their job monitoring
the water. The plants are also thriving and growing.
Our
facilities use only ecofriendly organic detergents and cleaning
products, and we encourage our guests to recycle. Thus we strive
to achieve a balance in sustainability with tourism in a fragile
ecosystem. Please feel free to ask about our system should you be
visiting us here at Driftwood Park Retreat. |
